As we approach the end of the year, it seems appropriate to pause and reflect on how profoundly technology continues to reshape our industry—and, more broadly, human cognition itself.
When Johannes Gutenberg introduced the printing press around 1440, it effectively ended Europe’s largest information enterprise: the monastic scribes whose role was to copy knowledge by hand. Yet the true impact was not job displacement. It was a transformation in how ideas spread, were compared, and were challenged. Technology researcher Brian Roemmele has aptly described this moment as igniting a “fusion reactor of ideas.” Human effort shifted from repetition to analysis, synthesis, and judgment.
We are witnessing a similar inflection point today. Artificial Intelligence is rapidly automating repetitive and procedural tasks, dramatically increasing speed and accuracy in decision-making. Many roles will change or disappear. But history teaches us that this is not an end state.
What becomes more valuable—not less—is judgment. AI can surface patterns and probabilities, but interpretation, accountability, and trust remain human responsibilities. New forms of expertise will emerge, just as they did after Gutenberg.
This lesson is particularly relevant to the business information and credit industry. Investment credit may ignite economic growth, but trade and consumer credit are the lifeblood of open economies, and they depend entirely on accurate, reliable, and timely information. They are the centerpiece of economic continuity. When information falters, confidence erodes—and trade and consumer credit retreat first.
It is therefore fitting to recall the enduring insight coined by Dun & Bradstreet at its centenary (1841–1941):
“Credit is Man’s Confidence in Man.”
Across every technological transition—from ledgers to databases to AI—that truth has endured. Technology changes how information is processed; confidence and judgment remain human.
